integrative medicine

How can integrative psychiatry help with stress-related disorders?

Unlike traditional psychiatry, integrative psychiatry targets the underlying cause of mood disorders, insomnia, eating issues, etc. instead of merely medicating the symptoms. Our approach identifies core imbalances, such as stress, hormonal imbalances, mineral and vitamin deficiencies and more, that are negatively affecting the brain and body networks. Through a careful study of your medical history, as well as lab testing, we work with you to find the cause and then determine your solutions.

Dr. Zendi, Nurse Practitioner, board-certified in Pediatrics, Psychiatry, and Integrative and Functional Medicine

Hello. My name is Dr. Zendi Moldenhauer. I am excited to join the team at Dr. Leila, Quality of Life Medicine because I look forward to combining my love for pediatrics, psychiatry, AND integrative medicine!

I was born and raised in South Africa and completed my bachelor’s degree in nursing and midwifery at the University of Cape Town. I traveled widely through Europe, then moved to the USA in 1996 to pursue my graduate studies at the University of Rochester. I completed an adolescent fellowship and a master’s degree to become a pediatric nurse practitioner, then practiced pediatric and adolescent medicine for eight years. During this time, I completed a post-master’s certificate as a psychiatric nurse practitioner and a PhD in nursing, with a research emphasis on adolescent mental health. I have worked as a psychiatric nurse practitioner with children, teens, and young adults for the past nine years.

Through my own personal health journey and health and nutrition coaching studies, I awakened to the need to integrate wellness approaches for the body, mind, and spirit. I am engaged in a process of integrating my conventional medical background in pediatrics and psychiatry with more natural, functional healing modalities to help people attain the highest level of health and wellness. I am fascinated by the interaction of nutritional, environmental, and lifestyle factors with physical, spiritual, and emotional health. I am committed to learning and practicing more integrated health care, and working with people to understand and promote optimal wellness.

Dr. Alexa, Family Nurse Practitioner, Doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine

I grew up in Lima, NY. My father first introduced me to functional medicine in my early years when he completed his doctor of naturopathy. He both taught and applied various holistic modalities to our family. Throughout the years, his teachings laid the groundwork for many of the health practices I continued to personally engage in, all the while undergoing my traditional western education. I became a registered nurse in 1986, practicing in cardiac care and various other areas. This is also when my interest in forensic medicine began with evidence collection of sexual assault victims and courtroom testimony.

I completed a master’s degree to become family nurse practitioner in 1998 and had experience practicing with several family practices including both inner-city and more rural settings. During these years, I completed doctorates in counseling psychology, philosophy, and naturopathy. I am currently continuing my training with The Institute of Functional Medicine.

Clearly I love to learn and I love to teach! I am currently on the faculty of the University of Rochester where I teach medical legal and forensic topics to medical professionals.

Through my own personal health journey and with a desire to achieve more lasting results with patients, I completed a doctor of naturopathy program in 2012 and am grateful to have a place to apply my knowledge with patients. One of my greatest joys is participating in the process of a patient’s transition from illness to wellness. I am thrilled to be a part of Dr. Leila’s team and assist patients in their journey towards optimal health.

Dr. Renee, Board-certified in OBGYN and Metabolic Medicine (CNY office)

I grew up in Herkimer, a small town in upstate New York. After graduating from Siena College in Loudonville, NY with a bachelors of science degree in biology, I went on to complete a doctor of osteopathy degree in 1999 from New York college of Osteopathic Medicine. I completed my residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Danbury Hospital in Connecticut, and practiced traditional OB/GYN for 11 years both in Norwalk, CT and Cooperstown, NY.

In May of 2012 I suffered a severe, life altering back injury. This experience changed both the scope of my practice and my outlook on traditional medicine.

In 2014 I was introduced to anti-aging, regenerative, and functional medicine by Dr. Leila Kirdani. Soon after I knew that this had become my calling as a physician. I became a member of the Metabolic Medicine Institute and completed my fellowship the same year.

I am excited to join Dr. Leila at her Central New York office where I look forward to seeing women of all ages, bringing their hormones and lives back into balance!

Natalie, MS, Applied Clinical Nutrition

Natalie’s interest in nutrition began during her undergraduate studies at Cornell University; she had originally wanted to go into medicine. While studying biology and nutrition, she quickly realized that so many current human illnesses are based in dietary and lifestyle habits. Natalie completed her Bachelor’s Degree in Human Nutrition from Cornell University in 2009 and went on to work in nutrition communication at Harvard University, and nutrition education through Washington State University in Seattle. Through her studies at Cornell, Natalie deepened her interest in understanding agriculture and food production, as she believes true nutrition begins in the soil.

Natalie has worked on farms in New York, Washington, and Argentina, managing Community Supported Agriculture programs and small-scale crop production. These experiences led Natalie to pursue a Master’s Degree in Clinical Nutrition through the New York Chiropractic College. Natalie currently teaches nutrition part-time at Corning Community College and is excited to be continuing her work as a nutrition specialist at Dr. Leila, Quality of Life Medicine.
